Wal-Mart Watch Congratulates Wal-Mart Workers in Canada on First Collective Agreement in North American Wal-Mart
In response to the landmark collective agreement ruling imposed by a Quebec arbitrator on Wal-Mart in Gatineau, Quebec, Wal-Mart Watch Executive Director David Nassar released the following statement:
“We congratulate the local United Food and Commercial Workers Canada union and workers at Wal-Mart’s Gatineau, Quebec tire and lube operation on being the first Wal-Mart location in North America with a collective agreement in place.
“On the heels of the Wall Street Journal report regarding Wal-Mart’s effort to intimidate U.S. workers to vote against Barack Obama in November, we are pleased that this small group of workers in Canada will receive the kinds of wages and vacation benefits that all Wal-Mart workers deserve.
“While the Chinese government-run union is able to negotiate better wages and benefits for its workers there and Canada is seeing some progress today, U.S. workers continue to wait to get the same respect from Wal-Mart.
“In the CBC news story, Wal-Mart indicated that the Canadian ruling was “incompatible” with its way of doing business. If higher wages, better benefits and fair treatment are incompatible with Wal-Mart’s way of doing business, it’s time for the company to change - which is what Wal-Mart Watch has been saying all along.”
