Washington, D.C., January 17, 2005 – Wal-Mart Watch Executive Director Andrew Grossman issues the following statement in response to Wisconsin Governor Doyle’s State of the State address:

Tonight Governor Doyle addressed a critical issue that is challenging every governor and state legislature in the country. Health care costs are spiraling out of control, and large employers like Wal-Mart are dumping their workers onto state Medicaid programs and sticking taxpayers with the bill.

Wal-Mart’s portion of the BadgerCare tab is four times as large as any other Wisconsin employer. It’s unacceptable that Wisconsin taxpayers are paying over $2.7 million to provide health care for Wal-Mart’s employees. Wal-Mart profited $10 billion dollars last year, yet 1,200 of its workers and their children are forced to rely on BadgerCare health care to make ends meet.

Last week, the Maryland became the first state in the nation to take action. We are encouraged that Wisconsin may soon be following suit, and look forward to engaging taxpayers and small business owners in a discussion about Fair Share Health Care.
