In response to Wal-Mart’s announcement today that it was laying off upwards of 1,000 employees in Bentonville, Wal-Mart Watch spokesman David Nassar released the following statement:

“We are saddened by the news that hundreds of employees in Bentonville lost their jobs today. At the same time, the Walton Family is worth over $100 billion and former CEO Lee Scott left his post with a reported net worth of over $200 million. We would have hoped that during this tough time, the company would have used some of that wealth to reinvest in its workforce.

Our hopes and prayers go out to Wal-Mart’s home office employees.”
