Jared Bowen’s Complaint to the Department of Labor

Click here to download"The matter involves the deliberate and unlawful retaliatory firing of a young executive by retail giant Wal-Mart. At the heart of the matter is the appearance of a complex and creative money-laundering scheme involving one or more high-level Company executives, including Tom Coughlin, the former Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, and other operating in his orbit. Bowen discovered a minor facet of this scheme and reported it to Wal-Mart's senior management in late January of 2005. Incredibly, just two months later, he was fired for brining the scheme to light.

That such a scenario could come to pass in the present climate of increased scrutiny over corporate conduct is shocking. But the underlying facts are well-documented. On April 8, 2005, the Wall Street Journal ran a front-page investigative report detailing Coughlin's alleged involvement in a series of questionable cash transactions, including payoffs to union officials as part of the Company's ongoing efforts to avoid organizing activity. The article concluded that Bowen's reports of unlawful activity helped trigger the internal probe that led to Coughlin's termination."
